Cold Laser Therapy

What is Cold Laser therapy?

Also known as “low level laser therapy,” cold laser is a non-invasive, drug-free, and pain-free therapy that is beginning to revolutionize healing in modern medicine and is re-writing the medical books on what is possible for chronic injuries, pain management, neurological impairment, and enhancing the healing process in disease conditions. In fact, research shows cold laser to be far more effective than traditional electrotherapeutic modalities like electrical stimulation and ultrasound. It can even heal wounds and fractures 60% faster!

Our office utilizes two different types of lasers. The most commonly used laser is the TerraQuant Laser by Multi Radiance Medical. TerraQuant® is the only noninvasive medical device available today in the world that provides a unique combination of super pulsed laser and infrared, visible red light and magnetic field based on Low Level Laser Quantum Therapy. With 25,000 to 50,000mW of power, this FDA-cleared device has more power than most class IV lasers with the safety of class 1M.

By stimulating the body’s own healing pathways at the cellular level, this pain-free treatment promotes healing without chemicals and without side effects. Science and research shows the following benefits with cold laser therapy:

  • Provides pain relief, reducing medication needs
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Reduces swelling
  • Stimulates cell growth
  • Stimulates cell metabolism (activation of ATP and protein synthesis)
  • Stimulates enzyme synthesis
  • Enhances collagen synthesis
  • Provides antioxidant effect
  • Stimulates immune system
  • Promotes tissue regeneration

Treatments are painless, drug-free, and non-invasive. Most importantly, they are effective.

What can Cold Laser therapy benefit?

Numerous randomized double blind clinical trials have showed efficacy of the TerraQuant® on various health conditions. An 88% positive effect was demonstrated in studies done on the efficacy of the TerraQuant® in relieving pain caused by arthritis of small and medium joints. The clinical study involved 140 participants. The TerraQuant laser is used in 30 countries for a variety of solutions and therapies, some of which include:

  1. Pain Relief
    1. Acute, Subacute and chronic pain relief
    2. Shoulder pain
    3. Carpal tunnel
    4. Back pain

How does Cold Laser therapy work?

Low-Level Laser Quantum Therapy utilizes low-energy and safe electromagnetic radiation that has beneficial effects on both the intracellular and intercellular processes.

  • Super Pulsed Infrared Laser Radiation penetrates 10-13 cm (4-5 inches) deep and has strong stimulating effects on blood circulation, membranes and intracellular metabolism.
  • Continuous incoherent infrared radiation penetrates shallower tissue depth and has an overall broader spectrum as compared to laser radiation.
  • Red light penetrates more shallow tissue depth and has a beneficial anti-inflammatory effect.
  • The magnetic field provides energy-mediated protection of the organism against environmental impacts: climatic factors and electromagnetic field. The magnetic field also keeps ionized molecules of tissue in a dissociated stage, thus enhancing the energy potentials at the molecular and cellular levels.

The science behind Cold Laser therapy.

The following is an explanation from the TerraQuantUSA website.

“Quantum therapy activates latent reserves of the organism adaptation — both at the level of the cell and entire biologic system — strongly enhancing immunity and mobilizing the organism for active resistance to functional disorders. This activation is stimulated by the therapeutic effects of four different electromagnetic fields, including pulse laser radiance, broadband infrared radiance, visible red light and static magnetic field. These radiances work simultaneously to transform living cells from an unstable state of illness into a stable, healthy state providing rapid and efficient clinical effects within a relatively short period of time.”

Lasers are based upon a principle of physics – wavelengths. For a laser to be considered “therapeutic”, they must have a wavelength between 630 and 905 nanometer (nm). The wavelength of a laser classifies it as either therapeutic (or “cold”) or surgical (or “hot”) lasers. Hot, or surgical, lasers cut and damage tissue. Cold, or therapeutic, lasers heal and regenerate, never damaging tissue.

The laser is able to supply cells with photons and electrons which affect light sensitive chemicals called cytochromes. Cytochromes are found in every cell of your body and are located in the “energy compartments” of cells called mitochondria. Mitochondria are known as the “powerhouse” of the cells and are the primary source of energy needed to carry out important processes. When these chemicals (cytochromes) are impacted by the correct wavelength, the energy compartments (mitochondria) are stimulated and the cell can heal.

The bio-chemical reactions increase the production of ATP, the primary source of energy in the human body. Think of it as the equivalent of gasoline in an engine. Just as a vehicle cannot run without gasoline, the cells and human body cannot run without ATP or energy. When ATP is produced, the arteries widen, which increases the flow of blood and oxygen to injured areas. At the same time, the lymphatic system is triggered to filter out the toxins that have built up. When toxins are removed, blood flow is present, and energy is available—the natural healing process of the body occurs.

The safety behind Cold Laser therapy

Cold laser has been used for more than 35 years with no serious side effects. However, treatments should be applied by a fully-trained professional. Because treatments are non-invasive and painless, they are safe for children and elderly patients. Some people experience minor tingling and warmth, but most people feel nothing. The TerraQuant® also has a an FDA Clearance and CE certification, a mark of European safety and legal compliance.

  • Multi Radiance Medical (MRM) Super Pulsed Lasers deliver higher peak power while maintaining the highest degree of safety of any therapeutic modality
  • Multi Radiance devices are more effective in delivering photons to deep tissues compared to Class I-III continuous and modulated lasers
  • Unlike Class IV continuous lasers, Multi Radiance devices eliminate the risk of thermal damage to a tissue
  • 25,000-50,000mW super pulsed laser power
